1820 - History of the First Gazette published in Lebanon
This pamphlet presents the elements of the publication of the first periodical in Lebanon in 1820 under the title L’Ermite du Mont-Liban.
It aims to highlight the cultural heritage of this country which has been profoundly concerned by culture and education throughout its long history, despite the hazards and misfortunes of its political history. Thus, as the reader will notice, at the time of the publication of this periodical, the publications edited by Bonaparte’s French army in Egypt had ceased to appear for more than twenty years. No review in the history of the press in the Arab and Near Eastern world reports any publication of this kind before 1820. This shows the eminent testimony of L’Ermite du Mont-Liban during the several years of its publication. Unfortunately, at this present time, we do not dispose of a collection of this periodical. After long and patient research, I discovered the reproduction of one of its numbers in the work of English traveler Frederick Henniker. This is why, by offering this pamphlet to the reader, I wish for the discovery of a complete collection which could be available somewhere in the world for its cultural and moral contribution to the heritage of Lebanon.
